Early life

McVeigh completed the NUJ National Council for the Training of Journalists Pre-entry course at the Belfast College of Further and Higher Education (BIFHE) 1991-1992

She grew up in Haverhill, Suffolk. Her father Anthony McVeigh was an Ambulance Man at the local Ambulance Station.

Journalism career

McVeigh started her career as a reporter and occasional presenter for BBC Newsline since the late 1990s.

McVeigh normally presents on Fridays between 7pm and 10pm and between 7pm and 12pm at the weekend, as well as occasionally appearing as a stand-in during the week. She presents alongside Clive Myrie, after her former co-host Chris Lowe retired.

She has been a presenter since Summer 2006 when she returned from maternity leave and replaced Joanna Gosling, who moved to the weekday schedule. Prior to this she had been a news correspondent for the BBC since 2002, with her reports appearing on BBC One, BBC News and BBC Radio.

She anchored much of the daytime coverage for the Papal visit on the BBC News Channel during September 2010.

Personal life

She is married to Martin Read. Their wedding service was held in Tullysarran, County Armagh.
